Fixed Rate
The amount you receive is locked the moment your order is created — provided your XMR deposit arrives within the deposit window. Market moves during confirmation no longer affect you. Ideal when certainty matters more than squeezing out the last basis point.
Variable Rate
The final rate is set once your deposit reaches the required network confirmations. You ride the market until execution — the outcome can be better or worse than the estimate. Often quoted slightly tighter than fixed, and some providers only serve variable.
The toggle sits in the bottom left. Switching it updates all quotes. Some providers don't support a fixed rate at all or for specific assets. Next to the toggle you always see the total estimated cost (spread) of the swap as one percentage. This spread includes all fees of the swap.

Most instant exchanges are operated by companies that can pause a deposit mid-swap for AML or fraud checks. Kotova X makes that risk visible — and lets you opt out of it entirely. With Freeze Protection enabled, only providers whose design means they cannot hold your funds are quoted; today that is the decentralized Chainflip protocol.
The trade-off is transparency, not magic: with Freeze Protection on you'll see fewer assets and routes, quotes are variable-rate only, and a refund address is always required so any failed swap returns funds automatically. You can toggle it per device in the Settings panel on the swap form — and even with it off, a shield icon lights up whenever the winning route happens to be freeze-proof.
